Are you currently looking for know-how about Heating System Repair?
How to Tell if Forced Warm Air Heating Is Gas or Electric
Forced warm air heating can operate using gas or electricity. Gas-powered systems use a heat exchanger and burner to produce heat while electric-powered systems use an electric element, similar to an electric radiator. Both systems use a fan to force air through the heat exchanger or electric element, which heats up as it passes through. The hot air then travels through a series of ducts and enters rooms in your home via vents. You can determine if your forced warm air heating is gas or electric by checking the heating unit.
Step 1
Turn on your forced warm air heating system and turn up the thermostat. You need the warm air circulating so you can check if it's powered by gas or electric.
Step 2
Open the door or cupboard in your home where the heating unit for your forced warm air system is located. You can see several metal ducts that go in and out of the heating unit.
Step 3
Check the front of the heating unit to determine whether it is powered by gas or electric. A gas heat exchanger uses a burner to produce heat. There is a small window on the front of the heater where you can see a blue flame glowing. You can also hear the noise of the gas burner. Electric-powered systems don't have a glass access window or make any noise.

How To Avoid High Heating Repair Expenses
You can maintain an furnace system a number of different ways. Chances are good that the system will be running all day long during the cold months. furnace systems generally run longer than needed, due to inaccurate settings. When troubleshooting and optimizing your heating portion of your furnace system, there are various things to consider.
Replace The Air Filter
This is the part you usually hear people talking about most often, but so few people take the advice and do anything about it. When there is a obstruction, you either run the chance of not circulating heat adequately or perhaps starting a fire. When the air filter gets dirty air will not flow through as well which means the furnace must work overtime and could also mean a likelihood of fire. When the furnace works overtime, it is more expensive to run. The fire issue is self-explanatory. In each case it is not good for reassurance or your funds.
Try The Blower
Look at your blower blades and clean them up. Should there be any build-up of grime and debris, your fan will need to work overtime to blow the air around, and your heating will be overexerting itself. Therefore the system is overworking and costing more money to run.
Fire Damper Function
Next, focus on the fire damper to ensure it is running acceptably. The fire damper is self-explanatory so pay attention to this factor.
The Flex Duct
It is feasible that your ducts have become damaged throughout the years for different reasons. If a duct has flattened or become blocked, your system will believe that the proper temperature has been achieved, which will be false. Finally your equipment will be working harder to maintain your home cool as you keep on adjusting the thermostat to reach comfy conditions.
Make Sure The Insulation Is Secure
It is easy to overlook the insulation, but is probably the most common reason behind a system malfunctioning. Be sure to look at the insulation and confirm it has not become loose and caused gaps involving the ductwork and the outside. When this happens the system works more than needed while attempting to reach the best temperature.
Air Ducts Need To Be Sealed
Make sure the ductwork is hooked up everywhere to all sections. These detachments may cause spaces in the airflow and result in a loss of heated air in your home, since it will be leaking out through the spaces.
Return Air Inlets And The Zone Dampers
Ensure that return air intakes are free of the dust and dirt so air can easily flow. Check your dampers to verify that they are in the best spot. During the year we may change the position of the damper for a lot of reasons (i.e. getting into a tight space or making room for storage). Check to see that the dampers are in the right position too.
If that is a little too much to handle on your own, we propose you hire a local plumbing contractor licensed for furnace and heating repair. You will find a number of heating specialists close to you who will care for all of this quite skillfully. For the right results you could set up annual upkeep for furnace and your heating people will call every year to take care of it.

Ways To Avoid High Heating Repair Costs
You can maintain an furnace system numerous different ways. Odds are, during winter months your heater runs throughout the day trying to keep the home warm. In fact, it is usually on more than it needs to be because it is incapable of maintaining an operable environment. When trouble shooting and improving the heating segment of your furnace system, there are several things to consider.
The Air Filter
This is what you usually hear people speaking about most often, but so few people take the recommendation and do anything about it. When there is a obstruction, you either run the chance of not circulating heat adequately or possibly igniting a fire. When the filter is dirty air cannot flow through either which suggests the furnace must work harder and could also mean a likelihood of fire. When the furnace works too much, it costs more to operate. The fire concern is obviously self-explanatory. In both situations it is not suitable for peace of mind or your budget.
Assess The Blower
Examine the blower blades to ensure they are clean. A messy fan will work harder to blow air around and naturally use more energy to maintain the temperature level you set it at. This implies strain in your furnace system and your pocketbook since more fuel is needed to continually run the blower.
Check To See That The Fire Damper Works
Next, focus on the fire damper to ensure it is running acceptably. This will make sure that the risk of fire is lowered and the system will work more efficiently.
The Flex Duct
Air ducts can get damaged over the years. If a duct has flattened or become stopped up, your system will think that the proper temperature has been achieved, which will not be true. When this happens the system works harder to do its job but will be incapable to attain the right temperature range.
Make Sure The Insulation Is Secure
Insulation is usually forgotten but is perhaps the most common reasons why an furnace system fails. Be sure to look at the insulation and validate it has never become unfastened and resulted in gaps involving the ductwork and the outside. When this has happened furnace will work more than wanted while trying to reach optimal temperature.
Air Ducts Need To Be Sealed
Make be certain the ductwork is connected in all places to all pieces. Disconnected ductwork will permit hot air leak out and naturally add to the running costs.
Check For Leaks In The Return Air Inlets And Zone Dampers
Be certain to check that return air intakes are clean and in good condition or your system will be out of balance. Look at your dampers to verify they are in the best place. Every so often a damper might get moved by mistake like when you need to squeeze by it, or create space for storage. For a properly functioning system, look to see that the dampers are actually in the right place.
If that is a little too much to handle by yourself, we propose you hire a local plumbing company certified for furnace and heating repair. You ought to be able to locate a reputable heating company who can take care of this for you. The best advice we can offer is to set up yearly upkeep for that appliance.

7 Home Heating System Types
It can be hard to let go of your old heating system and commit to a new one you hardly know. If you have an aging unit that needs replacement, however, it can be exciting to see the variety of heating technologies available as replacement options. All of these systems come in different models and sizes to accommodate your home. Consult a professional HVAC company for more information on installing or replacing a new heating system.
1. Furnace (forced air distribution system)
With a furnace (usually powered with gas), air is forced through a series of ducts. This distributes heated, conditioned air throughout the home. While furnaces can heat the air with electricity, propane, or oil, most U.S. homes utilize natural gas.
Gas furnaces are the most popular type of heating system since the forced air distribution system (ductwork) can be used by your air conditioner during the summer months.
2. Boiler (Radiator distribution system)
Boilers are another common heating system. They send hot water or steam through pipes to provide heating. While this enables you to practice zoned heating and cooling, they are also significantly more expensive to install and cost more money to run.
The reason why furnaces and boilers are known as central heating systems are because the heat is generated in a central area of the home and then distributed throughout the house.
3. Heat Pump
Heat pumps can be used to both heat and cool the home. They use refrigerant and electricity to transfer heat rather than generating it directly like a gas furnace. As a result, they are often much more efficient than other types of heating systems. Unfortunately, they work best in moderate climates where temperatures rarely dip below freezing.
4. Hybrid Heating
Hybrid heating combines the energy efficiency of a heat pump with the power of a gas furnace. Most of the time, the heat pump will operate to heat and cool your home. It is only during extreme temperatures that the furnace kicks on.
And since you aren’t just relying on one system, you will reduce significant strain on both units, thus significantly reducing the need for repairs and replacements.
5. Ductless Mini-Splits
By getting rid of the need for lots of air ducts, mini-split units allow you to create separate HVAC zones, each with a separate thermostat. This is very helpful in larger homes and add-on areas that don’t have ductwork installed.
6. Radiant Heating
Radiant heating sends hot water or electric heat through special tubes located in the floor (and sometimes in the ceiling or walls). The heat can be generated by oil, gas, propane, or electricity.
While the radiant heating distribution system can last a long time, repairs can become very expensive if a problem arises. The lifespan of radiant heat is dependent on its heat source system.
Learn more about the different types of heating systems.
In addition to the type of heating system you install, learn what else should affect your decision-making.
7. Baseboard Heaters
Usually reserved as supplemental heating or heating in an add-on, baseboard heating can be an effective and affordable choice. You have two choices when it comes to baseboard heating: electric or hydronic. Speak with your HVAC contractor for more information on baseboard heaters.

Just how do you feel with regards to Electric Furnace Repair?
Heating Repair And Regular Maintenance Tips
There are many ways to maintain your furnace system. Odds are, during wintertime months your heater is on throughout the day attempting to keep the house warm. In fact, it is usually on more than it needs to be because it is unable to maintain an operable climate. When troubleshooting and optimizing the heating portion of your furnace system, there are several things to consider.
Change The Air Filter
This subject is what gets talked about the most in talks about furnace maintenance, but is sometimes overlooked. When there is a blockage, you either run the risk of not circulating heat adequately or possibly starting a fire. When the air conditioner filter gets dirty air will not flow through either which suggests the furnace must work overtime and could also mean a likelihood of fire. When the system works overtime, it is more expensive to run. You want eliminate any likelihood of fire. Neither circumstance is good for the pocket book or your well-being..
Try The Blower
Check the blower blades and clean them. A messy fan will work overtime to blow air around and naturally use more energy to preserve the thermostat level you set it at. This implies strain in your furnace system and your wallet since more energy is required to constantly run the blower.
Fire Damper Function
Next, look at the fire damper to make sure it is running the right way. The fire damper is self-explanatory so take note of this aspect.
Look For Holes In The Flex Duct
It is feasible that your ducts have become damaged throughout the years for a variety of reasons. If there are obstructions or the duct has flattened anywhere the furnace system will think the correct temperature has been reached, which can be wrong. Ultimately your equipment will be straining to keep your home cool as you keep on lowering the thermostat to reach cozy settings.
Band Insulation
It is easy to overlook the insulation, but is one of the most common reason for a system malfunctioning. Be sure to check the insulation and validate it has never become unfastened and prompted gaps between the ductwork and the outside. If this happens, your system will not reach ideal temperatures and will work too much to try and accommodate.
Ductwork Needs To Be Connected
Make sure the ductwork is hooked up everywhere to all sections. Disconnected ductwork will allow warm air to escape and naturally add to the running costs.
Check For Leaks In The Return Air Inlets And Zone Dampers
Be sure to make sure return air intakes are dirt free and in good shape or your system will be unbalanced. Look at the zone dampers to check if they are in the right position. Throughout the year we may change the position of the damper for a lot of reasons (i.e. getting into a tight space or arranging for storage). Check to notice that the dampers are in the correct position too.
If that is a tad too much to handle yourself, we suggest you hire an area plumbing business certified for furnace and heating repair. There will be a number of heating companies around you who can care for this all quite competently. The most sage advice we can offer is to establish yearly upkeep for this appliance.

Types of Heating Systems
Central Heat
Furnaces
The majority of North American households depend on a central furnace to provide heat. A furnace works by blowing heated air through ducts that deliver the warm air to rooms throughout the house via air registers or grills. This type of heating system is called a ducted warm-air or forced warm-air distribution system. It can be powered by electricity, natural gas, or fuel oil.
Inside a gas- or oil-fired furnace, the fuel is mixed with air and burned. The flames heat a metal heat exchanger where the heat is transferred to air. Air is pushed through the heat exchanger by the “air handler’s” furnace fan and then forced through the ductwork downstream of the heat exchanger. At the furnace, combustion products are vented out of the building through a flue pipe. Older “atmospheric” furnaces vented directly to the atmosphere, and wasted about 30% of the fuel energy just to keep the exhaust hot enough to safely rise through the chimney. Current minimum-efficiency furnaces reduce this waste substantially by using an “inducer” fan to pull the exhaust gases through the heat exchanger and induce draft in the chimney. “Condensing” furnaces are designed to reclaim much of this escaping heat by cooling exhaust gases well below 140°F, where water vapor in the exhaust condenses into water. This is the primary feature of a high-efficiency furnace (or boiler). These typically vent through a sidewall with a plastic pipe.
New furnace standards are currently under development by the U.S. Department of Energy, and are due to be finalized in the spring of 2016. The current furnace standards have not been updated since 1987.
Heating system controls regulate when the various components of the heating system turn on and off. The most important control from your standpoint is the thermostat, which turns the system — or at least the distribution system — on and off to keep you comfortable. A typical forced air system will have a single thermostat. But, there are other internal controls in a heating system, such as “high limit” switches that are part of an invisible but critical set of safety controls.
The best gas furnaces and boilers today have efficiencies over 90%
The efficiency of a fossil-fuel furnace or boiler is a measure of the amount of useful heat produced per unit of input energy (fuel). Combustion efficiency is the simplest measure; it is just the system’s efficiency while it is running. Combustion efficiency is like the miles per gallon your car gets cruising along at 55 miles per hour on the highway.
In the U.S., furnace efficiency is regulated by minimum AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency). AFUE estimates seasonal efficiency, averaging peak and part-load situations. AFUE accounts for start-up, cool-down, and other operating losses that occur in real operating conditions, and includes an estimate of electricity used by the air handler, inducer fan, and controls. AFUE is like your car mileage between fill-ups, including both highway driving and stop-and-go traffic. The higher the AFUE, the more efficient the furnace or boiler.
Boilers
Boilers are special-purpose water heaters. While furnaces carry heat in warm air, boiler systems distribute the heat in hot water, which gives up heat as it passes through radiators or other devices in rooms throughout the house. The cooler water then returns to the boiler to be reheated. Hot water systems are often called hydronic systems. Residential boilers generally use natural gas or heating oil for fuel.
In steam boilers, which are much less common in homes today, the water is boiled and steam carries heat through the house, condensing to water in the radiators as it cools. Oil and natural gas are commonly used.
Instead of a fan and duct system, a boiler uses a pump to circulate hot water through pipes to radiators. Some hot water systems circulate water through plastic tubing in the floor, a system called radiant floor heating (see “State of the Art Heating”). Important boiler controls include thermostats, aquastats, and valves that regulate circulation and water temperature. Although the cost is not trivial, it is generally much easier to install “zone” thermostats and controls for individual rooms with a hydronic system than with forced air. Some controls are standard features in new boilers, while others can be added on to save energy (see the “Modifications by Heating System Technicians” section on the heating maintenance page).
As with furnaces, condensing gas-fired boilers are relatively common, and significantly more efficient than non-condensing boilers (unless very sophisticated controls are employed). Oil-fired condensing boilers are uncommon in the U.S. for several reasons related to lower latent heat potential, and potential for greater fouling with conventional fuel oil.
Heat Pumps
Heat pumps are just two-way air conditioners (see detailed description in the cooling systems section). During the summer, an air conditioner works by moving heat from the relatively cool indoors to the relatively warm outside. In winter, the heat pump reverses this trick, scavenging heat from the cold outdoors with the help of an electrical system, and discharging that heat inside the house. Almost all heat pumps use forced warm-air delivery systems to move heated air throughout the house.
A ground-source heat pump heats and cools in any climate by exchanging heat with the ground, which has a more constant temperature.
There are two relatively common types of heat pumps. Air-source heat pumps use the outside air as the heat source in winter and heat sink in summer. Ground-source (also called geothermal, GeoExchange, or GX) heat pumps get their heat from underground, where temperatures are more constant year-round. Air-source heat pumps are far more common than ground-source heat pumps because they are cheaper and easier to install. Ground-source heat pumps, however, are much more efficient, and are frequently chosen by consumers who plan to remain in the same house for a long time, or have a strong desire to live more sustainably. How to determine whether a heat pump makes sense in your climate is discussed further under “Fuel Options.”
Whereas an air-source heat pump is installed much like a central air conditioner, ground-source heat pumps require that a “loop” be buried in the ground, usually in long, shallow (3–6' deep) trenches or in one or more vertical boreholes. The particular method used will depend on the experience of the installer, the size of your lot, the subsoil, and the landscape. Alternatively, some systems draw in groundwater and pass it through the heat exchanger instead of using a refrigerant. The groundwater is then returned to the aquifer.
Because electricity in a heat pump is used to move heat rather than to generate it, the heat pump can deliver more energy than it consumes. The ratio of delivered heating energy to consumed energy is called the coefficient of performance, or COP, with typical values ranging from 1.5 to 3.5. This is a “steady-state” measure and not directly comparable to the heating season performance factor (HSPF), a seasonal measure mandated for rating the heating efficiency of air-source heat pumps. Converting between the measures is not straightforward, but ground-source units are generally more efficient than air-source heat pumps.
Direct Heat
Gas-Fired Space Heaters
In some areas, gas-fired direct heating equipment is popular. This includes wall-mounted, free-standing, and floor furnaces, all characterized by their lack of ductwork and relatively small heat output. Because they lack ducts, they are most useful for warming a single room. If heating several rooms is required, either the doors between rooms must be left open or another heating method is necessary. Better models use “sealed combustion air” systems, with pipes installed through the wall to both provide combustion air and carry off the combustion products. These units can provide acceptable performance, particularly for cabins and other buildings where large temperature differences between bedrooms and main rooms are acceptable. The models can be fired with natural gas or propane, and some burn kerosene.
Unvented Gas-Fired Heaters: A Bad Idea
Gas or kerosene space heaters that do not have an exhaust vent have been sold for decades, but we strongly discourage their use for health and safety reasons. Known as “vent-free” gas heating appliances by manufacturers, they include wall-mounted and free-standing heaters as well as open-flame gas fireplaces with ceramic logs that are not actually connected to a chimney. Manufacturers claim that because the products’ combustion efficiency is very high, they are safe for building occupants. However, this claim is only valid if you keep a nearby window open for adequate fresh air— which defeats the purpose of supplemental heat. Dangers include exposure to combustion by-products, as discussed in Ventilation, and oxygen depletion (these heaters must be equipped with oxygen depletion sensors). Because of these hazards, at least five states (California, Minnesota, Massachusetts, Montana, and Alaska) prohibit their use in homes, and many cities in the United States and Canada have banned them as well.
Electric Space Heaters
Portable (plug-in) electric heaters are inexpensive to buy, but costly to use. These resistive heaters include “oil-filled” and “quartz-infrared” heaters. They convert electric current from the wall socket directly into heat, like a toaster or clothes iron. As explained further under “Selecting a New System,” it takes a lot of electricity to deliver the same amount of useful heat that natural gas or oil can provide onsite. A 1,500- watt plug-in heater will use almost the entire capacity of a 15-amp branch circuit; thus, adding much additional load will trip the circuit breaker or blow the fuse. The cost to operate a 1,500-watt unit for an hour is simple to compute: it is 1.5 times your electricity cost in cents per kilowatt-hour. At national average rates—12¢ kWh for electricity— that heater would cost 18¢ per hour to run—and quickly cost more than its purchase price. On the other hand, for intermittent use, it is the “least-bad” solution when alternatives would require major investments to improve ductwork for a specific area, for example. Just remember, electric resistance heat is usually the most expensive form of heat, and it is, therefore, seldom recommended.
“Electric baseboard heat” is yet another kind of resistive heating, similar to a plug-in space heater except that it is hard-wired. It has two principal virtues: the installation cost is low, and it is easy to install individual room thermostats so you can turn down the heat in rooms that aren’t being used. Operating costs, as for all resistive systems, are generally very high, unless the house is “super-insulated.”
Wood-Burning and Pellet Stoves
Wood heating can make a great deal of sense in rural areas if you enjoy stacking wood and stoking the stove or furnace. Wood prices are generally lower than gas, oil, or electricity. If you cut your own wood, the savings can be large. Pollutants from wood burning have been a problem in some parts of the country, causing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to implement regulations that govern pollution emissions from wood stoves. As a result, new models are quite clean-burning. Pellet stoves offer a number of advantages over wood stoves. They are less polluting than wood stoves and offer users greater convenience, temperature control, and indoor air quality.
Fireplaces
Gas (and most wood) fireplaces are basically part of a room’s décor, providing a warm glow (and a way to dispose of secret documents), but typically not an effective heat source. With customary installations that rely on air drawn from the room into the fireplace for combustion and dilution, the fireplace will generally lose more heat than it provides, because so much warm air is drawn through the unit and must be replaced by cold outside air. On the other hand, if the fireplace is provided with a tight-sealing glass door, a source of outside air, and a good chimney damper, it can provide useful heat.
State of the Art Heating
Radiant floor heat generally refers to systems that circulate warm water in tubes under the floor. This warms the floor, which in turn warms people using the room. It is highly controllable, considered efficient by its advocates, and is expensive to install. It also requires a very experienced system designer and installer, and limits carpet choices and other floor finishes: you don’t want to “blanket” your heat source.
Contact the Radiant Panel Association(link is external)
Ductless, Mini-Split, Multi-Split. Residential ductwork is relatively rare outside North America. “Ductless” heat pumps, which distribute energy through refrigerant lines instead of water or air, are widely used. Large field trials in the Pacific Northwest suggest that they can have good cold weather performance, and be very cost-effective where replacing electric resistance heating. Like ground-source systems, relative immaturity of the market helps assure that whole-house multi-split systems carry premium prices.
Combined heat and power (CHP) or cogeneration for houses is being seriously studied in some countries. The basic premise is to use a small generator to meet some of the electric demand of the house, and recover the waste heat (typically more than 70% of the heating value of the fuel) to heat the house (hydronic or water-to-air systems) and make domestic hot water. These systems are not yet widely available. They are likely to have the best economics in houses with high heating bills because the house cannot be feasibly insulated, such as solid stone or brick homes.

Protocols: Duty, Despair and Decentralisation transcript - Matt Dryhurst
https://medium.com/@matdryhurst/protocols-duty-despair-and-decentralisation-transcript-69acac62c8ea  No-one is going to pay for music anymore sufficient to keep scenes as we know them going. At least not in the ways many have been used to. So while some artists might make petty change from digital sales through Bandcamp, my assumption is that those figures will dwindle over time as streaming establishes greater supremacy. My assumption is also that whichever streaming platform wins (as all roads lead to monopoly in this current paradigm), the artists that benefit from that streaming platform will be those that most dutifully satisfy the requirements of the streaming platform, which I think is a very different aspiration than satisfying the requirements of feeding healthy international and local music scenes. When Daniel Ek says he wants “one million artists to live from their work”, I think of one million musicians, sitting in flat shares, stocking playlists for people to shower to. Music from nowhere, for no-one in particular. A far cry from a healthy, or interesting, music community that people in attendance today might care about.  My other assumption is that Spotify won’t succeed. If I were Google, or Apple, or Amazon, I would look at Spotify’s immense burn rate: “they posted an operating loss of $461 million on revenue of nearly $5 billion last year”, and bide my time. From where I stand, Spotify is spending immense amounts of money to reorder the way music works as we know it. They might well eradicate the traditional label and publishing model, by finding new ways for artists to post directly to their platform, locking them into new forms of agreements over their work that also indemnifies them, or any prospective parent company, from legal action over copyright infringing material that might be hosted on their servers. Soundcloud is trying to do something similar with their new agreements, and in lieu of a viable business model appearing, all I read from that is that these are moves to leave the door open to potential acquisition by a bigger fish I don’t think there will be a streaming competitor to Spotify, or whoever might acquire them. Our best bet is to drastically reconsider the value proposition of music. What do people value and what are they prepared to support? the club music economy is resilient in ways that other scene economies are not. Club music, on the contrary, is very much based on location and loyalty, and is more generalised and functional. People go to dance, and are often less concerned with who is playing than what they are playing. The functional underpinnings of most club music are also compatible with the functional expectations of streaming, as both require a fast and steady stream of somewhat anonymous compositions that transition seamlessly into one another. Music to work to. Music to play to. Seamless. This is all well and good, but again we are left asking, what about those musicians who don’t want to tailor their output to a predetermined function?
One of the significant battles we face at the moment is a war between music from nowhere, and music from somewhere. Music designed for instantaneous engagement, and instantaneous dismissal, and music that communicates with an archive. The role of the critic has been under threat some for time, and will continue to lose influence to algorithmic populism, and the kindof process-hack algorithmic manipulation that makes stars on Instagram and Youtube. Spotify and Apple are already hiring journalists to cover the work they promote on their platform, so we will see more hagiographical journalism feeding that system, and the traditional idea of the critic as arbiter of taste, and gatekeeper of the archive, will continue to be eroded. Other gatekeepers, such as labels and niche festivals, will continue to lose prominence over time unless they radically reconsider their value propositions. The end of history? Nope, but the end of an era for sure. The recent announcement that Conde Nast intends to paywall all of it’s publications, presumably including Pitchfork, by 2020 is interesting news. Exclusivity like this might work for the cream of publications, and also might perhaps trigger a snow ball of similar subscription plays by smaller publications. I like it when people pay for things, and we will see how that experiment plays out, but once paywalled, what we understand as the archive might well end up being housed behind those walls. Better that than disappearing altogether, perhaps. RBMA and Boiler Room have been busy creating maps of culture. Maps are valuable, as they allow for the establishment of trade routes. On the one hand, RBMA and Boiler Room are doing a great job, as their models are predicated on the primacy of the kind of cultures that are under threat by the algorithmic populism of say, a Spotify or a Youtube. Contrary to the hackneyed divisions that linger from the past, there really is no “mainstream” or “underground” in this new economy. Under ad-driven platform capitalism, there are either fertile pathways to sell people stuff, or barren and quantified pathways to sell people stuff. It’s a map. I’ve said a million times, in this economy, unique niches (or unexplored corners) are highly valuable. If you are an artist whose practice speaks to a unique intersection, say based on genre, identity, or personal narrative, then you are an interesting proposition to advertisers, as you are prospectively establishing new territory to sell people stuff. Brands, as patrons, want you to establish new territory on their behalf, and be first to that party. So, for example, if now millions of people have the tools to create good-enough-Jeff-Mills-derivative techno tracks, it only makes sense that the distinguishing logic that someone might use to opt to support producer X over producer Y would heavily focus on tangential narrative elements. So much so that these narrative elements become the main source of value when competing with art of similar formal characteristics. Those tangential elements are perhaps better understood as metadata; equally optimal for growing new audiences and courting the interest of brands looking to achieve visibility in new niche markets. The original indie pioneers did a great service to music, but let’s be real, have left us all an impossible legacy to continue. Record sales = money in the bank = options. Period. Options to say no. Options to do wild, and risky things. Who has those options today? Where would the money come from?     So the original indies, as far as I can tell, were predicated on two firm principles: 1.The majors were corrupt, strong armed bad music into the popular spotlight, and ignored radical new developments in music creation and localised scenes that needed to be represented. 2.On the other hand, being independent meant doing what you wanted, however you wanted it, with no-one above you influencing your creative decisions. Self sufficiency basically. People who colluded with brands were considered sell-outs as they had to tame their vision to appeal to a wider audience and secure that funding. I know of more people who cite concerns about the gentrifying effects of transnational cultural institutions spending money across the globe, but lets be honest, indie music scenes of socially mobile young artists were doing just fine at gentrifying neighbourhoods before brand money got involved. So, in the vast vast majority of cases, what is the inconsistency here? Warp, or Dischord, or 4AD, or whatever, aren’t communist enterprises. They aren’t radical free culture enterprises. No. They are and were, for better or worse, entities that made great strides to support the individual visions of unique artists, and helped them to gain prominence in the market for music, and for a period of time symbiotically reaped the rewards from sales of that work. I think that in many ways, the foundational logic of independent music won. Now large portions of the economy are predicated on the promise of individualist independence. Everyone is free to self publish their unique perspective, and hypothetically find an audience for it online. That being said, we hardly live in a utopia as a result.
It is no secret that many of the original indies were founded by the wealthy, or in many cases by middle class entrepreneurs who could afford to dedicate their 20s to a speculative cultural business. Equal ability to publish something means nothing when only those with the ability to fund promotion of the work are discovered. I’ve said it before, there will be an abundance of free culture, and free time, in the slums. Amazon can produce your product cheaper than you can, and strong arm you out of business unless you work with them. Facebook can acquire any competitor before they become dangerous. Pop music can appropriate and spit out your micro-scene before it has any ability to generate its own momentum, or it’s own funds.
In 2019 we all work for Kanye, only some of us figured out how to get paid for it.
So in the absence of the ability to accrue a foundation of wealth and stability for new music, independent artists who gained prominence via the centralised media channels of the 80s and 90s will reign supreme over the long tail of precarious younger artists until the day they choose to call it quits. The gravitational pull of those artists who established the categories by which playlists, and festival line ups, must orient themselves to reach enough people, dictates that most new music emerging needs to flatter the formal and conceptual foundations of those pioneers.
There is going to be a whole lot more music that flatters the impressive legacies of Aphex Twin, Bjork, Timbaland, Missy Elliott, Aaliyah, Jeff Mills etc as those are the kind of petrified shapes of envelope-pushing music from just before when the volcano of Web 2.0 went off 🌋 .Radical musical culture circa-1996 preserved forever, like the ruins of Pompeii - or as I believe Mark Fisher (or Simon Reynolds, or both??) referred to it, a kind of permanent 1990s.
Well on the one hand, the platform monopolies like Spotify and Youtube are going to continually erode your influence with every new person that comes online. Their algorithms will direct traffic away from your priorities, and towards theirs, and to survive in that ecosystem you will need to satisfy their agenda. Doesn’t sound too independent does it? Journalists will have to write more about what Spotify prioritises. Artists will have to make work to satisfy the debased formal requirements of those platforms. Labels will be shoo-ed off like annoying pests that are messing with the platforms long term vision. Really bad, and a great reason to be really angry at that particular logic of culture.
If your previous raison d’être was to support marginal communities, and weird music, you are probably going to end up being out competed by their models. Models that manage to leverage brand money to support those communities will grow and grow in prominence. The thing is, if you are playing exactly the same game, and one entity found a model to support exactly the same thing that you have supported traditionally, but more effectively, then you are probably going to lose that game. It sucks, but that’s what is likely going to happen.
I think the ‘cultural cartography’ model discussed before is quite precarious, as of course they too need for new and diverse things to actually be happening on the ground in order to maintain the model that they have built. Companies dependent on brand money are always a few emails away from being out of favour. State supported festivals are very fragile to that possibility too. As the popular narrative that Spotify is ‘solving the problem’ of music proliferates further, it is going to become increasingly difficult for people to convince brands, or an increasingly conservative state, that these niche pockets of music we might care about are worth the investment. Stat-supported music, if unimpeded, will come into direct conflict with state supported music.
So I actually think it is in everyone’s interests for new models to emerge.
I think some of those models can be complimentary to the institutions we have today, and some can be wholly antagonistic, and ideally we would see both come to prominence in the next few years for the health of scene development across the board.
As I said before, one reason I see things going south for competitors to the brand-aligned organisations is that they are competitive. You solve this problem quite easily by becoming uncompetitive, and doing something they can’t or won’t do.
One thing brands or their intermediaries can’t do, for example, is distribute ownership under a cooperative model. They literally can’t. But there are all kinds of reasons why that might make sense for various different cultural scenes or organisations.
Co-operativising creates loyalty and an alignment of interests between an organisation, festival, artists and audience.
Co-operativising allows for collective strategising towards common objectives. Rather than funds being ingested to the benefit of one artist, in competition with another, those same funds can be channeled into infrastructure that helps everybody and keeps the culture afloat.
So what of decentralization? To explain what decentralisation is, I’m going to borrow from Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin’s model, which is focussed on technical infrastructure but has application beyond that.
He breaks decentralisation into 3 groups:
Architectural (de)centralization — how many physical computers is a system made up of? How many of those computers can it tolerate breaking down at any single time?
Political (de)centralization — how many individuals or organizations ultimately control the computers that the system is made up of?
Logical (de)centralization — do the interfaces and data structures that the system presents and maintains look more like a single monolithic object, or an amorphous swarm? One simple heuristic is: if you cut the system in half, including both providers and users, will both halves continue to fully operate as independent units?
Benefits of decentralisation in the context of music:
1) the network/archive is hard to take down. If Soundcloud fails, what happens to all that music, and the activity around it? If a magazine goes down, what happens to all of that history?
Decentralised, nodal systems like blockchains, or torrent networks, are resilient both architecturally and logically. You can’t cut the head off them. It took the state to take down What.cd for example, such was its resiliency.
Projects like IPFS propose a peer-to-peer immutable web, a web that can never be taken down, fortified by a nodal structure not dissimilar to torrent seeding.
2) regarding political decentralisation, this can be approached by entertaining ideas of common ownership. Rather than a centralised team at Spotify, or Youtube, making decisions that determine how your artwork is distributed, or the logics by which some work is made more visible, and prioritised over other work, politically decentralised networks entertain the possibility of pluralistic and democratic decision making.
3) Decentralised networks, when dealing with an open source code base, also allow for forking. If you don’t the way things work, you are encouraged to take the code and build something that disagrees with it. Over time what this mechanism creates is a healthy competition of ideas, and participant choice.

All the Time in the World: Chapter 5
Read previous chapter
Its what’s on the inside that counts.
A cheesy saying, but one that Barry strived to live by nonetheless. He wasn’t one to make snap decisions about people upon meeting them based of first impressions or appearances. At least, he tried not to. There was some amount of decency in most souls, he believed, and even if it wasn’t obvious immediately, he’d give them a few chances. Obviously, some people really were just miserable beings; he’d run across some, both in his former life and in the past eleven years. But most proved his theory, given the chance, and he’d met and become friends with so many different and interesting people in his lifetime. It made life more fulfilling.
Which was why this particular world made very little sense to him.
Continued under the cut, or you can read it on ao3
“Have you tried wearing something other than jeans?”
“No. I mean, I don’t really have any—wait, what’s wrong with my jeans? You don’t like my jeans?”
“Did I say that? No, your jeans are rad. I’ve never met anyone who could pull off dad jeans as well as you can.”
“Dad jeans? Lup, they’re not-”
Lup looked up from the map she was studying, smirking. “I mean, if you weren’t wearing jeans, how would I even know its you? Oh my god, wait!” she gasped. “Are they like, a talisman or something, that holds in some super power? If you take them off, do you become like Super Monster Barry?”
“Yeah, actually,” Barry confirmed, voice hushed now. “I was trying to keep it a secret all this time, but you caught me. At night in my room, I take them off and I get super buff. Bigger than Magnus. Bigger than that ripped guy who kept throwing boulders at the Starblaster all last cycle. It’s terrifying.”
Lup snorted at that. “Holy shit.”
“Right?” Barry chuckled. Then he sobered, rubbing the back of his neck. “Uh, is there actually something wrong with-”
“Of course not!” she interrupted, looking serious now. “No one who matters thinks there is. It’s just that this place is…judgmental.”
She wasn’t wrong. They’d been in this world for two months now, but it was blatantly obvious that they were being judged the moment the IPRE landed here.
The crew had seen fully functioning cities and humanoid beings as they flew the Starblaster down into the plane, and Davenport had deemed it safe to venture out soon after the ship landed in a wooded area just outside of town. They didn’t make it very far before they were visited by a group of well-dressed individuals demanding to know who they were and what their business here was. Davenport had tried to explain, but he was immediately cut off by a man in the middle, who seemed to be the leader of the group.
“Not you,” he’d basically sneered, pointing at Davenport but not sparing him a glance. His finger slid across the line until it made its way to Taako, and the man’s face had become instantly friendlier. “Him. Or her.” And at this, he pointed to Lup next to him.
The crew had gone silent, and they all stared in the direction of the twins. Barry could see Lup attempting to form words through her surprise, but Taako had gotten there first.
“We’re the IPRE, my dude, and we’re gonna be here for a while.”
Surprisingly, this made the man laugh. “That will be just fine. I would like you to come with me just for a bit, my friend, uh…” The man waved his hand as if beckoning for a name.
Taako cocked his head a bit. “Taako?” It sounded like a question.
“Taako, yes. Just for a bit. I’d like to know more but I’d rather not stand here and chat.” The man looked around as if the scenery of the woods offended him. When Taako didn’t immediately move, the man turned to smile at Lup. “You can come too, Miss.”
“Lup.” Lup offered, hesitantly.
“How lovely,” the man sighed. He then turned around and his group began to walk away “Anyway, come along,” he called over his shoulder.
The twins had glanced down the line back to Davenport, who gestured for them to go ahead.
“Careful,” he warned them. “We’ll be here.”
When the twins were out of sight, the rest of the crew continued to stand in silence, rooted to their spots, until Merle let out a low chuckle.
“What a dick.”
They all laughed at that and agreed, and with the tension broken, they made their way back into the Starblaster to wait for Taako and Lup to return. Barry’s stomach churned with anxiety, but he tried to comfort himself with the fact that if the man had wanted to hurt them, he probably would have done it here instead of taking them elsewhere. Besides, he seemed impressed by them for some reason. Thankfully, his worries were for nothing, as the twins came back in one piece a few hours later with a story to tell that made the everything make sense. In context, at least.
The man they’d met, Delman, was in charge of the city they’d flown over, and he was more than willing to share with Taako and Lup the way things worked, provided they tell him exactly why they were here. The twins were completely honest and took the opportunity to summarize the IPRE’s mission, about the Light, and about the timeframe they had to save this world from the Hunger. When they finished, they sat in awkward silence as Delman seemed to consider their explanation. Then he laughed.
“If that’s the story you’re sticking to, my friends, that’s quite alright with me.” As the twins tried to convince him, he shook his head. “Really, you look nice enough. I’m not sure about this Hunger nonsense, but I won’t stop you and your…associates from conducting whatever business you deem necessary, provided that you all understand how we operate.”
And with that, he told them briefly about the world. It sounded similar to home, except for one key difference: society was basically split up based on beauty.
“He didn’t really say so out right, but I sort of got the impression that if you didn’t have looks, you didn’t have much,” Lup explained, shuffling awkwardly. “People without them have harder jobs and worse living conditions by extension. Apparently, even the ‘pretty’ people spend large amounts of time and money trying to make themselves prettier, whatever that means. Didn’t really ask.” She paused then, clearly uncomfortable. “I mean, isn’t it like, a subjective thing? I don’t really get why-”
“Lup, I’m not offended by what happened earlier,” Davenport interrupted kindly. He gave her a smile. “Not everyone can appreciate such a dignified mustache,” he added, twirling the end of his. “Clearly this Delman fellow didn’t.”
“Sounds like an…interesting culture,” Lucretia said. “I don’t know what the standards of beauty are, but from the welcoming we got today, I’m guessing we might have a hard time.”
“Then again,” Taako spoke up from beside his sister, noticeably posing just a little. “You do have the two of us, and we evidently did pass the beauty portion of this little pageant show, so maybe privileges extend to you by association.”
Oh, well thank God. Barry stopped short of rolling his eyes. It’s not like Taako was wrong. Or not objectively one of the prettiest people he’d ever met.
And luckily, as Taako had predicted, the crew had had a relatively easy time of it so far. As Delman promised, they were left to their own devices as far as looking for the Light went, and they were granted access to the better parts of the city, including job positions, which was necessary for basic necessities and part of the expectations of living here. It wasn’t much of a burden, and in the case of some of them, entertaining. Taako had found a high fashion clothing shop and spent most of his time there, though he didn’t necessarily need to. Lucretia worked in a library, but Barry suspected that she spent most of her time there reading about the world for her own records. The rest of them found part time work in various shops, which allowed them time for their own personal activities. Like finding the Light.
Barry had taken up the endeavor himself this cycle, and as usual, Lup had volunteered herself as well. Luckily, they’d seen it falling this time around, so they had a direction to head in at least. And now that they’d gotten a detailed enough map of the area to search for it, they wanted to start as soon as possible. They hadn’t found it last cycle, and the IPRE had watched as the Hunger consumed the entire plane, growing bigger as it did. Given the resources they had, Barry had a feeling it wouldn’t be too difficult to find this time, so he wasn’t that concerned. His biggest concern was just making it through the year.
And maybe it was a silly thing to worry about. As far as he could tell, this place wasn’t all that dangerous. There were functioning societies, safe living conditions, and nothing that wanted to hunt them down. It’s just that the people here were….
“Judgemental’s a good word for it,” Barry agreed, watching as Lup circled an area on the map.
“My point is that people here are weird. And if you get snubbed, its nothing to do with you, its just them.” She looked up from her map again. “Personally, I think you’re pretty great, jeans and all. Wouldn’t change a single thing.” She winked.
He felt his cheeks turn red, and bent down to pretend to study the map in an attempt to hide it. “Gee, thanks,” he mumbled.
He didn’t do a good job of it. “Nerd,” she grinned.
The urge to say something cheesy and embarrassing was strong, but fortunately he was saved by a shouted greeting from Taako from behind him. Barry turned to find both the elf and a smartly dressed man he didn’t recognize approaching them.
“Playing hooky, Taako?” Lup asked her brother.
“Hell no, who’d play hooky from heaven itself? Nah, me and Flynn are just on break. He’s showing me the best place to eat lunch. The soup’s to die for, apparently.”
“Bring me back some, then.”
“Only if I don’t eat it all.”
Lup made a face, then turned to Flynn and smiled. “I’m Lup.”
Barry held up a hand. “Barry.”
Flynn’s eyes briefly slid to him before focusing on Lup. He smiled at her. “Nice to meet you.”
Barry couldn’t tell if he was mishearing the emphasis or not, but chose to believe it was in his head.
“Well, we’re off to have this life changing soup,” Taako announced with much emphasis that Barry did not make up as he turned to leave. “See ya, suckers.”
Barry watched Flynn as he turned and trailed after Taako, then turned back to the map on the table. “So we mostly have a plan of attack here. I think we should pack a backpack to get us through maybe a day or two, and we can set out tomorrow. And maybe Davenport will let us take the Starblaster at some point if we need to go super far, but we’ll play it by ear.” He turned to Lup. “Shit, all that talk about soup is making me hungry.”
Lup didn’t respond, and in fact gave no indication she heard him at all. She stared off in the direction that Taako and Flynn had gone.
“You there, Lup?” he asked, confused.
At the sound of her name, she turned towards him quickly. “What? Oh yeah.” She gave him a light punch in the arm. “Soup, I hear you!”
                                                          ~
Day after day spent trekking further south from the main city, and Barry and Lup had nothing to show for it but tired feet and questions that they could answer if they only had time to stop and experiment with the world around them. No trace of the Light, but now they knew where it definitely wasn’t, so neither of them could really write off the month as a waste. Not that Barry could ever consider time spent with Lup a waste anyway.
With no sign of their prize anywhere, they decided to head back to civilization to regroup and gather more supplies before heading back out again. As they entered the city, they spotted Davenport walking through the square.
“Hey Cap’n Port!” Lup called.
Davenport turned at the nickname, and immediately looked relieved to see them. “You’re alive, I see. No luck, huh?”
“Not yet, but we think that based off the Light’s trajectory when it fell, we just have to adjust our course a little,” Barry reported. “According to the map we have, its in the direction of the other city.”
“Sounds like a good place to start. Be sure to rest up a day or two before you go. I’ll see you two in a bit, I’m off to find Lucretia,” Davenport said, giving them a small wave.
Lup saluted him. “Bye, Cap’n Port.” She then turned to Barry. “Let’s stop by and see Taako. Gonna beg him to make some food for us to take.”
“Sounds good.”
As they made their way to the shop, Barry quietly watched the passerby going about their business, feeling the judgment emanating from them. He’d forgotten about it over the past month away from them, but he’d try not to let it get to him while he was here.
“Afternoon, Lup,” came an unfamiliar voice.
They both turned to find an only vaguely familiar face as a tall, well dressed man came walking towards them. Barry remembered meeting him, but couldn’t for the life of him remember-
“Flynn!” Lup exclaimed with an incredible amount of enthusiasm. She then winced slightly, seemingly embarrassed about it.
At least she could remember the guy.
“Haven’t seen you around in a while,” Flynn said.
“We’ve been looking for the Light,” Barry told him.
Flynn glanced at Barry briefly, then looked away. “Ah, Taako mentioned something like that.”
“Do you know if he’s at work?” Lup asked, noticeably quieter now.
“Yes, he is, and I was on my way back there now. I’ll walk with you.”
As the three continued on their way, Barry fell silent as Lup and Flynn talked, feeling awkward. He didn’t see a point in speaking up, as anything he said might be ignored by the latter. Might as well spare himself the effort. When they reached the shop door, Lup turned to Barry.
“Coming in?”
“Nah, I don’t go into clothing shops I can’t buy dad jeans in,” Barry joked.
Lup laughed, and then reached up to pat his head. “That’s cute, good one,” she giggled.
Barry blushed slightly, and Lup laughed again as she headed inside. He smoothed his hair back down as he watched her go. The sound of a scoff behind him reminded him that Flynn was still standing there, and the smile he didn’t know he was wearing faded away.
The man was slightly taller than him, and he stared down to look directly at him now. Scrutinizing, Barry could tell. Like everyone else in this city, he was good looking in an other-worldly sort of way, but it didn’t seem like he’d had enhancements to make himself look like that. He looked like he might be friendly person, if he wanted to be.
He looked Barry up and down once, then smirked in a decidedly unfriendly way. “Yeah right,” he snorted.
Barry watched, confused and uncomfortable, as he opened the door and followed Lup inside.
                                                             ~
Against the urging of Flynn, who said it was “absolutely awful” there, Barry and Lup travelled in the direction of the other city, where those who had been deemed not worthy of living in the main city lived. Both of them were apprehensive, but upon their arrival, they found that, despite looking a little more run down there, everyone was perfectly nice and welcoming. Barry tried not to take it to heart that their worst crime was looking as plain as himself and put his efforts toward searching for the Light.
After a few weeks of searching and asking around, they got a lead that someone on the outskirts of town had possession of an object that sounded like what they were looking for. They followed the directions of the townsfolk to a crumbling little house and found an older woman there, who gladly showed them that she did, indeed, have the Light. She was unwilling to hand it over for free, however, claiming she’d “found the funny thing fair and square, kids,”, but she was willing to hand it over if they worked for it.
With no other option, Barry and Lup spent a few more weeks helping the woman, Myra, fix and clean up her house. Neither complained and they found it fun at times, although Lup occasionally seemed to stress over it.
“We really need that Light, Barry. We need to get it back.”
Barry thought that was obvious and unsure why it needed restating, but he continually assured her they’d have it soon and be back with the rest of the IPRE. They had plenty of time left in the year, after all, and the Light was practically theirs already.
True to her word, Myra, with a safer and more livable house, handed over the Light, and sent the two on their way. Barry and Lup returned to the Starblaster late one evening, and Magnus rushed them both, blubbering and thanking them profusely for “not being dead”.
After untangling himself from Magnus’s bear hug, Barry, exhausted, brought the Light to Davenport for safe keeping, and then made his way back outside the ship to look for Lup. He found Taako hanging out by the entrance instead.
“Barold,” Taako said, drawing out the end of the name.
“Taako,” Barry replied, nodding. “Nice…hat?”
“What, this thing?” Taako adjusted the hat slightly. “Got it at the shop. Someone requested this thing specially made, and then had the gall to say they didn’t like it. But their loss is Taako’s gain. It’s beautiful.”
Barry stared up at it. The bottom of it expanded a few inches passed Taako’s head, and the top of the hat probably reached a foot taller than the elf did, the tip of it bending sharply down.
“It’s very…” Tall? Pointy? Purple? “You,” he finally decided.
“Thank you!” Taako smiled, pleased, then pointed at him. “You looking for Lup?”
“Yeah, actually.”
“I saw her go off with Flynn somewhere.”
“What? He was here?” Barry asked, surprised.
“Sure was,” Taako replied, already sounding mentally checked out of the conversation.
“Is he-I mean, will she um…come back?”
“Well yeah.” Taako turned and stared at him blankly. “Eventually.”
Barry decided not to wait up and head to bed instead, feeling vaguely uneasy for no particular reason.
The next morning at breakfast, Barry saw Lup walk in. Taako waggled his eyebrows at her, and Lup gave him a shove. She made a face at him, then grabbed a plate and sat down across from Barry.
“We gonna science the shit out of the Light today?” she asked.
Barry attempted to shake off the uneasy feeling in his chest. He smiled, but wasn’t sure if it looked right. “Definitely,” he managed anyway.
                                                            ~
The IPRE couldn’t bank on much, but one thing they could say for certain was how much time they had. All of them knew at any given moment how many more months were left, how many days they had to get through, and if they were feeling really precise, how many minutes had to pass before the Hunger came to chase them off to a new world. The other guarantee was the seven of them. After eleven years together, they knew that they were the only permanent relationships they could have, and they knew how to work together and rely on each other.
This of course did not mean they didn’t form connections with the creatures they met, and it made it all the more important to find the Light to save them. They found it impossible to go through life never forming relationships with new people, so they allowed themselves to do so, knowing that there was an impermanence to those relationships. No matter what the type.
Davenport had once or twice gone for tea with a very pretty gnome a few cycles ago, and had come back much bubblier than his usual serious self. Merle had been awfully popular back in the second cycle with the dwarves, Barry remembered, but no one knew any details and definitely didn’t want to ask. Barry knew that Lup had not been the first of them to find a little more than a friendship with someone from one of the different worlds. It just had never been Lup.
And nothing really changed. She was still around, and they still talked and laughed and worked together. It wasn’t like Flynn hung around them, but Barry suspected that he had no desire to be anywhere that Barry was. On occasion though, Lup would be absent, and Barry would work by himself while he tried to shake off the uncomfortable melancholy that seemed to tighten his chest. Still, he had a job to do, and he wasn’t going to sit around and mope just because Lup had a life.
“Barold, buddy, why the long face?”
At least, he tried not to.
“I’m fine, Magnus.”
Magnus sat down across from him, resting his chin in his hands as he studied him. “You sure, man?”
“Yeah, just taking a break. What are you doing here? Don’t you have work?” he asked, trying to change the subject.
“Yeah, but I’m skipping out. Got someone to cover for me.” Magnus leaned back in his seat. “I’m sort of tired of it,” he added.
“What, work?” Barry asked with a chuckle.
“Nah, this place.”
Well that made two of them. “Why’s that?”
“Everything’s like, so clean here. There’s not a spec of dirt on anyone. It’s so weird.”
That would be something that bothered Magnus, who liked working with his hands. Who didn’t need everything to be so damn pretty and perfect. “That’s fair.”
“Also if some guy looks down his nose at me one more time today I might slug him. Or challenge him to arm wrestle me.”
Barry laughed loudly. “Do you think that would work?”
Magnus put one elbow out in front of him and opened his hand toward Barry. “Do you want to arm wrestle me?”
“No thank you,” Barry said, chuckling nervously. “The only possible outcome would be pretty embarrassing.”
Magnus folded his arms and leaned back in his chair again, looking slightly smug. “Yeah, I think it probably would.”
                                                            ~
“It all looks good to me. I checked out the Starblaster pretty thoroughly a couple times now, and we should have no problems taking off in a couple weeks when the Hunger comes.”
“You rock, Cap’n Port!” Lup cheered.
“Oh, well I’m…thank you.” Davenport averted his gaze, looking slightly embarrassed by Lup’s enthusiasm. He cleared his throat. “Anyway, continue to go about your lives for the next few weeks, and try not to do anything...life threatening.”
“Hey, I’ve stayed alive so far!” Merle argued, gesturing to himself for emphasis.
“I wasn’t calling out anyone in particular,” Davenport replied innocently.
“To be fair, Merle,” Lucretia chimed in, “you do have a bad track record.”
“And there’s still a few weeks left, so who knows what could happen,” Magnus chuckled. “Hey, do you need a bodyguard?”
“No, I don’t need a bodyguard,” Merle retorted with a pout.
“Just everyone be careful, please,” Davenport sighed, dismissing them.
Poor Merle; five deaths in eleven cycles was quite a feat. He really should be more careful.
“I think he should take Magnus up on that offer,” Lup interrupted his thoughts, sidling up to him with Taako in tow. “Sounds bad ass.”
“Yeah, it might do him some good,” Barry agreed with a chuckle. Then he sobered. “There has to be some sort of consequence to this whole dying and coming back to life business.”
Taako rested an arm on Lup’s shoulder, leaning into her. “Other than the dying part?”
“Well, I mean…maybe,” Barry said.
“I guess it’s the suffering those of us that are left behind must endure in your absence,” Taako replied dramatically. “Speaking of leaving behind, is there anyone you’ll miss in particular here, Lup?” he asked his sister teasingly.
Barry suddenly wished he was anywhere else but here being a part of this conversation, the familiar unpleasant feeling flaring up in his chest.
Lup shoved him lightly off her shoulder. “No, not really.”
“Not even a certain gentleman, Mr. What’s-His-Handsome-Face?”
She studied her fingernails nonchalantly. “You mean Flynn? Nope. Stopped hanging out with him. He did something I didn’t like.”
Taako’s face quickly morphed from playful to dangerous. “Should I go kill him?”
“Chill out, don’t go wasting a spell. He didn’t do anything, he just said something about somebody I care about.” She made a fist with the hand she was studying. “But I showed him what for.”
“You punched him?” Barry blurted, slightly too loud, suddenly interested.
“A little,” she confessed. “But that’s the thing.” She turned to Barry suddenly, the intensity of her expression demanding his attention. “No one gets to say something bad about the people I care about.”
Taako whistled. “God, what a bad ass, you’re so scary.”
He was clearly joking, but Barry agreed with the sentiment wholeheartedly anyway. He’d thought it since day one, although those feelings had morphed into more of an admiration than anything else. It also helped that he knew one simple truth about his friend.
She’s on my side he thought as Lup smiled at him.
                                                          ~
Barry stood outside the Starblaster, watching the sky with the rest of the crew. They’d take off as soon as they spotted the Hunger. It was always anxiety inducing waiting for the dark tendrils to appear, but it made it slightly awkward that they had some doubting onlookers this time around.
“And you just happen to know that this hungry thing is going to come any moment now, is that right?” Delman asked, flanked by a few higher ups of the city.
Davenport sighed. “The Hunger, yes. As we’ve said countless times before, it’ll come. Thankfully, we have the Light and are taking it with us, so it’ll chase us down, but it might cause some problems for you here, so I do urge you to get somewhere safe. You do have time.”
“Doesn’t seem all that necessary.”
“Why are you out here, then?”
“You all look rather ridiculous,” Delman laughed. His friends followed suit.
Barry was alright with the year being up.
“Where are Lup and Taako?” asked Magnus beside him.
That was another cause to his anxiety. “Lup said she was going with Taako to his shop so that ‘he could say goodbye,’” Barry told him. At least it was only a few minutes away from the ship.
“That guy’s not right,” Magnus said.
Hard to argue with that. Barry fell silent and fell back into watching both the sky and the distance for his friends to return.
Thankfully, the latter came first, as he saw both Lup and Taako sprinting towards the ship. Lup slowed as she approached, but Taako ran right by him and through the Starblaster’s door.
He poked his head out. “I’ll be here if anyone needs me!”
Magnus shook his head. “Not right,” he repeated as he turned and headed into the ship himself. Lucretia and Merle followed suit.
Barry turned back around to find Lup standing in front of him now, hands held behind her back.
“Did Taako pay his respects?” he asked.
“Hugged every last one of those gorgeous shirts,” she replied. “He’s keeping that hat though.”
“Somehow that doesn’t surprise me.”
“Me neither. Speaking of keeping, I actually got you something,” she added.
She pulled her hands from behind her back, producing a dark blue piece of folded clothing. “So I saw this suit and thought of you. I mean you wear jeans exclusively and that’s awesome, but maybe one of these days you’ll have something you desperately need a suit for, and I figured you should have one. If you need it. Or it can hang in your closet. Doesn’t matter, I just want you to—”
“Lup,” Barry interrupted quietly, stopping her rambling.
“Yeah?” she asked hesitantly.
“Thank you. It’s great. I’ll definitely find a reason to wear it someday,” he promised, feeling a little choked up for no reason.
She was quiet for a moment, then punched him in the arm, a little harder than normal. “You better. I bought it for you. Well, bought’s a strong word.”
Barry winced as he rubbed his arm. “What do you mean?”
A distant shout caught both of their attention, and they turned to see Flynn running towards them.
“I actually kind of stole it and he may have seen me do it.”
Barry laughed despite himself. “Oh my god. You should probably…”
“Yep, see ya!” She turned and ran back into the ship, carrying the suit.
Barry watched her go, then turned towards the approaching Flynn, who slowed his stride panting heavily. Davenport looked toward Barry with concern, but Barry waved him off, and the captain continued to watch the sky.
“Morning Flynn,” Barry said when the man was in hearing distance.
“Did Lup just go into that hunk of junk with a suit?” the man asked irritably, ignoring the greeting.
“I don’t know, she’s really fast,” he told him, unable to stop the smile that spread onto his face.
Flynn held a hand to his forehead, exasperated. “Whatever, I can’t be bothered with one suit. It wasn’t expensive or nice anyway, not a huge loss.”
“Sure,” Barry replied innocently. “Seemed nice though. You know, from what I saw,” he added when the man gave him a look.
Flynn continued to stare for a moment, saying nothing. Then he shook his head. “I really don’t get it.”
“Get what?”
“You. Her. Have you seen her?”
“Almost every day for eleven years. What’s your point?” Barry asked, a little irritated now.
“My point is that you and her do not make sense.”
Barry sighed, trying to be civil. “Well, it’s been just the seven of us all this time. I sort of doubt we’d be friends in any other life, but I can’t imagine anything else at this point.”
“Friends,” Flynn echoed, smiling disbelievingly.
“Yes, friends!” Barry shot back too loudly, over it. “I don’t understand your confusion.”
“No, I suppose you wouldn’t,” he laughed. “But I think I now understand yours.”
“What does—”
“Time to go, Barry!” Davenport suddenly shouted.
Barry looked down. He hadn’t noticed how the world looked desaturated until now.
“Shit, what the hell is that?” Flynn asked, panicked, looking up at the sky.
“That’s what me and my friends saved your ass from. You’re welcome,” Barry replied. He found he sincerely meant it. “You have a few minutes, so get yourself somewhere safe. Hopefully there won’t be too much damage down here,” he added, backing up.
Flynn turned and ran, as did Delman and the others, and Barry and Davenport did the same, back into the Starblaster. Davenport headed for the wheel.
“I’d say buckle up, but it doesn’t matter that much!” Davenport called back to them. “Just hold on to something!”
Barry grabbed the bar next to the window and closed his eyes, breathing deeply and trusting that their captain would fly them safely out like always.
“Do I need to go back down there and kick his ass?”
Barry opened his eyes to see Lup in front of him. He smiled at her, the mounting fear he felt dissipating a little. She looked actually willing to do it.
“No, I don’t think he deserves that and the Hunger.”
“He’ll be fine,” she said.
“I think so.”
They both fell silent, concentrating on not being thrown around by Davenport’s maneuvers. The anxiety and fear gripped his heart once more, so he turned to Lup again.
“Lup.”
“Yeah?”
He breathed in deeply, steadying himself. “Thanks for the suit.”

"When contemplating the Notre-Dame cathedral, one had better consider how it compares with other cathedrals and sacral buildings rather than begin by visualizing it as an accretion of mineral solids."[1] One also rarely judges the construction and constitution of it but rather contemplate it, astonished, without grasping the motive, as one could freeze in front of a monster. This accretion of mineral solids who stands in front of us, and those disseminated in Paris, are our rivals today. And we shall overpass them by our greatest attention. By listening to you, you will listen to us. It is time for a new humanism. Time to set a place, a forum able to stage the powers of today. Time to call up the ancient, dispose them, squeez them, twist them to reassess today's world. We have lost the meaning of natural proportions, let us look at godly excess. Monotheic religion castrated our apprehension of the world, seeing things either good or bad. Even the Opera Garnier which claims to be an ecclectic, never-ending spectacle appears flat in its complicated oppulence. Sophisticated complexity is what we are longing to. The polytheic family encompasses the world and beyond, spinning around our prosaic flatland. A figure founded on intricated concepts is a powerfull constellation naviguating above polysemic ambiguities. As the grand daughter of the Philantropist eponym Elisabeth Murdoch, our Elisabeth Murdoch feels the will to engage her vision in the public debat. Since her childhood she was confronted to a rigourous, competitive and mostly manly world. Inspired by her grandmother she cultivated a spiritual friendship with greek feminin characters. Grew up with them. Now she wants to stage them. But how do they want to talk ? "Where should one search, in the city, for that lost unity of glance and speech? In what space can one again listen to himself? Can the theater, which unites spectacle and discourse, not take up where the unanimous assembly left off? "[2] As we stand here, in a place of great affluence and exposure, with the reminiscence of a residential block behind us, Notre Dame before and the Seine and green spots inbetween, I cannot help myself but to think of "the Paintings (in the ancient theatres that) represented three sorts of Buildings, which made three sorts of Scenes, The Tragick by Magnificent Pallaces, the Comick by Private Houses, the Satyrical by Fields and Groves."[3] This is the place. "(...)(A)dvertising, news, publicity, periodical literature." This is Elisabeth's inherited background. "(...) They work to a single end: to give the stamp of authenticity and value to the style of life that emanates from the metropolis(...) , (to) create a picture of a unified, homogeneous, completely standardized population (...)." Take Paris for example: "(...) the Champs Elysées, bec(a)me the goals of vulgar ambition (and a)dvertisement bec(a)me the “spiritual power” of this new regime."[4] Elisabeth has grown bored of this univocal apprehension and wants us now to refute that. "This is the moment when the masterpieces of ancient sculpture are about to appear in all their glory in front of the eyes of France (...)  (they) have chosen to live amongst the French, and are to be adored in their living images. Ah! Who would be able to step into the temple of these divinities without saying to himself: these masterpieces, these gods had ceased to be gods for us; the cult of Antiquity had been forgotten; who would believe it?(...); it is Vien, it is David, who then made themselves into their apostles and ministers; it is through them that this great revolution, which has at least given us the hope of creating gods ourselves, has taken place in the arts."[5] It appears also appropriate for us, architects, to call up and refer to past apostles of our art. Vitruve and Alberti. The one who in Momus places "the extended climax (...) in an urban theater where the gods act as their own effigies(, the one who) repeatedly uses the word persona (“mask” or “personality'') to underline the false, theatrical behavior of his characters."[6] Alberti will embody our urban theatre, Elisabeth's friends, our Personas. The story will therefore intentionally follow the unfaithfull path. And those masks will "assure(...) the erection, the construction of the (new) face (of Elisabeth), the fascialization of the head and the body: the mask(s) (are) now the face itself, the abstraction or operation of the face. The inhumanity of the face."[7] So be it. Let them be the masked actresses of a twisted tragedy, trapped in their performance, speculating above our heads, fertilizing our ground. A spectacle of a new kind. Let them play, individually, together, contradict each other, themselves. Let them work as technologies embedded in concepts and rituals. As a constellation, they are powerfull. As a system, they can deal with the plenty, transform it. As an unfaithfull story, it accesses the realm of discussion. Finally as statuses, they need a sophisticated territory from which to operate, a palace. Three Faces where "(i)t is not the individuality of (each) face that counts but the efficacy of the ciphering it makes possible (...)."[8]
The face is a surface, (...) the face is a map." [9]
We have announced a number of figures and our intention to spatialize them. "For each genre, now, the problem will be to decide whether its audience is such as to demand utility or delight or both, and what brand of either of these will be acceptable to it."[10] Time to summon Alberti and Vitruve. But keep in mind : "The mathematics that is needed here is of a new brand."[11] According to the treatises of our masters, the theatre is a kind of mythical module present in most classical entertainement building. Take the theatre, elongate the arms along parallel lines and you will have a circus, or duplicate it, set them in a circle and you will end with an amphitheatre. As such, they have most of their elements in common. Or as Alberti likes to say "if (he is) not mistaken, (they) are totally composed of either stairways or, more especially, windows and doors."[12] Elizabeth's palace will merge the three typologies and be simultaneously a theater, a circus and a amphitheater, composed of stairways, windows and doors, as the temple of our time, able to adapt to change, suitable to glorify the unknown. A place which could embody the spectacle. The Palace of Spectacle. Three personas. Pandora, Circe, Metis. Not the ones we usually know. Their Alter Ego. The ones who stand up, do not apologize. These are Elisabeth's Friends. These are the masters of the area, the rulers of the "compartition (which) divides up the whole building into the parts by which it is articulated."[13] "The idea of a constitution, therefore, involves not only the idea of hierarchy of authority or power but also that of a hierarchy of rules or laws, where those possessing a higher degree of generality and proceeding from a superior authority control the contents of the more specific laws that are passed by a delegated authority."[14]   Approching the building you would have already noticed on the façade the different motivations at stake in the building. Flavoured rythms, proportions and nodes are just the superficial expression of the inner game. Otherwise the colonnade and "the spaces between the columns (which) should certainly be considered among the most important of openings"[15] bind, over three tiers, "as far as possible, (the whole in an) integral and unified structure"[16] reflecting the building's main function as a theatre. By its semicircular form, it is accessible from three sides through "royal doors"[17]. Each persona takes its origin behind the colonnade, in a chamber equal to one third of the lineament, expands from there through the whole building, converging at the center of the stage and intersecting themselves beneath it. There, at the very heart of the theater should lie Elisabeth's private hotel. But we will eventually get there, let us first retrace our steps a bit and proceed to the description of the private quarters of our personas. Pandora has herited a box, a jar which contains unspeakable truth, she knows now how to sort things, pick up elements, unleash others. She actually lives outside, among the men. As such her chamber is characterized by openness. There are two types of skin, the inner and the outer."[18] If the latter is kind of strict or well defined, her inside space is far more curvy and mellow, embracing the visitor. Everything there reminds of the sensual, material, confortable and overwhelming nature of its resident. Highly decorated, floor, wall and ceiling are a canvas where she do not mind showing off all her pomp and circumstance. It is a showcase she presents you. Treasures, gifts, jewels, secrets, objects of all kinds. honest and luxuous. Circe masters metamorphosis by exploring with drugs and potions, she learned to articulate her recipes and to play with the right parameters. She erected her own palace inside the building, living there isolated, luring you to her. In "(t)he zone stretching between (the structure) referred to appropriately as "paneling" (and consisting of) (...) the skin and the infill."[19], she created an ambiguous space which folds and unfolds in every part. Simultaneously inside and outside, most of all inbetween. She embodies bipolarity, dualism. Before you even notice, you are at her mercy, enchanted, trapped, swinging between fear and desire. and Metis, renowned for her cunning and wiseness, makes problems no longer valid. She is from another world, inhabits the space, fills it. She is the omniscient negative space. Floor, wall, ceiling are defined and modelled on the volume they content. Her. If she is the flesh, "anything else (...) come under the description of bones. Also included in the bones are the coverings to the openings, that is, the beams, whether straight or arched: for (we) call an arch nothing but a curved beam, and what is a beam but a column laid crossways?"[20] Columns pointing in all directions. As such, the room is acetic and performative, tricky and threatening. Overwhelming in its kind. Material and immaterial.
Pandora, Circe and Metis "(...) (a)re living geometry, lines and curves of color, entwined into a coalescing whole yet maintaining distinct identities."[21] "(V)aulted passageways, all similar and modest in size, (..:) some leading into the central area and some ascending to the uppermost steps"[22] act as neutral territory to connect every parts of the building including Elisabeth's Appartment, the fourth chamber. In this room, the three personas intersect to form the most sophisticated and suitable dwelling for our host. Above unfolds the actual theater where our personas play yet another kind of game, much more specific. The stage belongs to Pandora, the ceiling and backwall all glassed to Circe and the portico to Metis which "work prevents sound from escaping, and compresses and fortifies it (...).[23] Inbetween, the steps, the common ground, the binding element, as the motive of the theatre, "the place from which shows are seen", as an accretion of mineral solids. Finally if you dare yourself till the top of the steps and through the portico, you will reach the terrasse slightly above the surrounding parisian roofs and from there, be able to listen to the city.

Huawei Watch GT Smartwatch | REVIEW
Hey everyone what is going on today I'm showing you this beautiful Smart Watch this thing is sexy it's sophisticated looking and everything about it and the outside looks absolutely great but how is it on the inside how are her feelings how about that personality that's what I'll get into and see if this watch is worth it for you guys folks this is the Huawei watch GT the version I have here is the classic priced at $229 at the time this video as always I'll place my affiliate links down in that blog end below click on my links for the most updated prices in real-time you never know when these things might go on sale matter of fact I think the black sport model is at least cheaper right now so again check out those links as well as being transparent wow I did send us over for review but my assessment was not altered.
In any way, I'll be going over both pros and cons I'm Charles with Techs Geeks review room and I'm here to help you make that purchase decision welcome everyone to another video going over the physical features first I very much love the look and the feel of this watch you can beat a judge so comment down below but here are my three things that thing every consumer will appreciate now first up is durability and the quality of the materials the stainless steel casing has a DLC coating diamond like carbon coating making this very much scratch resistant now with some smart watches in the past the same amount of time testing herself I would have Nick's or scratches that would show up within let's say even a week this one doesn't full disclosure I've had this for about a month now but we'll see how long this will hold up but for a month it looks pretty darn promising now second the silicone strap itself is very comfortable very much flexible on my wrist I haven't had any issues of irritation or rashes and the level look on the outside seems pretty good too the color matches my shoes I do love the look of that leather the stitching the little details that pieces everything together and if for some reason you don't like it similar to most if not all other smart watches these days there is a tool at for you to swap out that van now the third physical aspect I love about the Huawei I'm finally at a fitness size that I'm absolutely happy with I love my Samsung Galaxy watch but I will admit though it is a little bit bulky the Huawei comes in at ten point five millimeters and it's just the right size not too cumbersome to feel it against my sleeves when I wear long sleeves or when I do shoulder presses at home or maybe doing push-ups and my wrist or my hand is bent backward like this it's not getting in the way it's not like you can see my muscles or anything like that but it's also not too thin to basically feel lackluster either the fitness on this SmartWatch is seriously what every SmartWatch should strive for when you're at this thickness this would be more appealing to mainstream or if anything the average consumer.
Now getting into other standard features this has a 5 ATM water-resistant rating safe for splashes rain-snow freshwater swimming and such we have the optical heart rate tracker on the back as well physically connected are used to charge to watch which I'm okay with I would prefer the convenes of a wireless charger but the pins do function fine and produce less heat which is the enemy of batteries now one of the biggest pros and cons on the history of this blog here or so I think the battery life is phenomenal that's the good part while weighs climbing up to two weeks of typical performance that does include heart rate tracking on 24/7 and while we claims that's with ninety minutes of exercise per week now with my testing I'm a virgin about a week worth of battery life give or take a day or two depending if I'm more active on certain weeks or not but compared to the competition that's still seriously good Samsung in the amazing Apple Watch for my test we're averaging four to five days of normal use take away a day or two maybe two if you're going all out with GPS and heart rate tracking and such but with the Huawei experiencing five to eight days that's impressive especially considering they watch GT's price points.
Now here's the con well the reasons how Huawei achieved such amazing battery life is the development in their use of their own operating system it's called light OS know many Huawei software is running leaner less bloatware maybe their system is that much better optimized but with a new OS to help with a battery life there comes limitations because the OS is just simply so so new now for the Huawei watch GT there are no third-party apps and keep in mind this watch is focused on health so we can't install oddly Strava Run Keeper and map my run all three apps that I personally use and the data from Huawei health cannot be exported to those tabs either at least at the time this blog to be fair the while we watch GT is priced lower than the flagship watches out there but there are clearly nonflagship smartwatches that offers more than it was GT even last year's Huawei Smart Watch had more but again it wasn't running light OS and it doesn't have the same banner life either now one feature though I loved on the older Huawei watch since I briefly touched base on it, the budget issues Zen watch - also from back in the that I reviewed - even the flagship competitors today I can't take phone calls on this I can't take phone calls right from my wrist I don't get NFC either to make credit card payments with my wrist unless I would love to leave my phone behind when I'm working out and have music stored on my watch connect my Bluetooth earphones or headphones to it and then go for a run leaving that phone behind that's not possible now there's sport-oriented watch so everything I've mentioned so far are those limitations a deal-breaker for you let us know in the comment section below like I've said before your comments do help others coming in and trying to decide if this is for them or not.
But moving out here take a look at the screen and then continuing with my experiences the screen is great though it's big 1.3 inch AMOLED display a resolution of 454 by 454 which is on the higher end Samsung only has 360 by 360 tick watch a great budget brand with comparable prices have a resolution of 400 by 400 it's also bright in sunlight it's easy to read and due to the high resolution I don't see any pixelation now with the experience on the right side the top button brings up all your included apps like I said a lot of health features and you can rewind this video if I went a little too fast for you now tapping on the button again brings you back to your home screen button on the bottom right here triggers your workout profiles and tracking parameters now taking a look here running since it is the most popular sport or activity that most people do there is GPS built-in also GLONASS and Galileo with all three every time I'm attempting to personally connect it is fast here and the tracking is accurate to know right now I'm in of course an office building medical steel and concrete and there's what two more floors above me so it might have a little bit of trouble in real-time but also you get real-time heart rate tracking once you start the activity you have this color band up here that indicates your heart rate zone which I absolutely love in turn I can't tell if I'm pushing myself too hard or not also there's pace distance and time are of course shown as well now pulling the screen up you have your step count, cadence, total calories burned another swipe shows how many feet climbed your current elevation and neck swipe shows your heart rate in real-time unless this is really cool here your trailing average pace are you going slower or faster than your average with a very cool animation in play. So for the moments that you're running and tracking what is displayed, I'll be honest with you I think it's great it's everything that I need and it's all the data that I want while running making this one excellent running companion app or running companion watch but like I said again I wish there's built-in music with Bluetooth for my earphones simply sticking with other apps would have been tremendously helped maybe in version 2.0 now let's get back to the main screen here and going through some of the smart features now from the home screen you can hold it down you can hold down that watch face and select from a variety of others that Huawei provides to you now keep in mind there are no third-party apps which means there are no other watch now faces available until why wait updates their operating system like I said at times video there is a huge limitation some of them look good some of them look ok it really honestly depends on your preference here now from the main screen swiping down shows your Do Not Disturb feature find your phone and settings pretty straightforward going back to that main home page here swiping up instead shows all of your notifications now I can't clear out just one notification unfortunately I have to scroll all the way down whoops sorry about that scroll all the way down here and then click clear all to get rid of them now while in notifications you also notice I can't respond to anyone of them there's no text to speech you can't scribble text out here and no old-fashioned typing on the screen to respond to those text messages messenger and email that's again available on other competitors. Last but not least going back to the home screen here and now swiping right you have your heart rate monitoring which has been accurate for a Smart Watch from my experience I just wish there was just more data such as my last 5 days maybe an option to see what's considered as fat burning versus cardiovascular it's good data if you want to see what your day is looking like but looking at some history on the watch itself I would think would make it but more interactive useful and practical swiping for the weather is also available but unlikely competitors with more mainstream operating systems I wish I could see what the next five days are maybe the hourly reports to see when it will rain in my area we simply don't get that now besides weather the last screen shows a ring of colors representing steps active minutes and the amount of time I've been sitting very similar to the apple health display on their SmartWatch other then that what's been offered in y ways like OS the speed and functionality has been good with minor legs and hiccups here when I first tested the watch after a week that lag or stutter has been gone for the most part I don't think I've noticed it anymore it was really subtle now I do wear this to sleep and it's been as accurate as my Fitbit that I also wear my right wrist here down to the minute at a time so it's reassuring that these two devices are confirming my sleep is pretty accurate or it's reading pretty accurate with each other now I do very much battery the segmentation of light sleep versus deep sleep versus REM sleep very similar to fit bit’s and the breakdown as you can see I'm a very light sleeper now you do have the ability to set up a vibrating alarm through the app itself the watch does vibrate when I receive notifications and also of course a vibrating alarm to wake me up in the morning I'll admit though it's on me very much lighter and keep in mind I am a light sleeper so it does wake me up that is but I think for most people it might not work also and to supplement that as well when I receive notifications probably a moderate amount of time I do miss the vibration altogether I just don't sense it or feel it on my wrist.
Conclusions So in the end here in the Huawei watch GT nailed some areas down gracefully the fitness in wash display the battery life the Bell quality and the look as well it's all on par and again the thinness on this thing is a huge seller for me but the lack of experience of what a SmartWatch should be the interconnect ability the function we've clearly seen available on older models that actually uses Google's operating system it's been amazing with those smartwatches and I feel like now we're missing out in my personal humble opinion this feels more like a fitness or a high-end activity tracker masking itself as a SmartWatch I love why away smartwatches from the past but man be light OS it's holding me back so much so that's it folks be sure to subscribe to my blogs since I'm testing attending gear to get to a million subs fired.

How Tech Debt Is Bankrupting Content Marketing
The pizza was delicious. It was May 2014, and the content marketing team was celebrating the one-year anniversary of its digital magazine for one of the most prestigious financial services brands in the world.
By all accounts, every goal had been met. It launched on time and only slightly over budget. The audience was growing steadily, and the sales group loved the insight and new opportunities that the magazine produced. Content marketing was a hit at the firm.
The lead account director for the content agency sidled up to the content marketing director and congratulated him. “You know,” she said, “we’re ready to start phase two. We’ve got a promotion and audience development plan, and the audience analytics dashboard ready.” The content marketing director smiled. “I know, I know. I think we’re ready. Let’s sit down on Monday and road-map that.”
Monday never came.
Tech credit card hits its limit
The following week, the team learned the new vice president of digital worked with the CIO to institute a new “One Site 2015” initiative. The company was to centralize all blogs and microsites into the main corporate website and integrate it into the main enterprise CMS.
The content marketing director desperately pleaded his case. Re-platforming the magazine’s WordPress site and Google Analytics into the enterprise CMS would take months and hundreds of thousands of dollars. And, it wasn’t even clear that there would be any benefit.
He lost.
The content marketing team spent the better part of six months re-platforming the magazine into the enterprise CMS. Some magazine features that didn’t meet corporate security and IT conformance were lost. The magazine’s look and feel changed because the enterprise CMS “can’t do that.” The audience promotion and development plan, along with the analytics plan, were sidelined.
Then, a new CMO joined the firm, and budgets were put on hold. Her first order of business was to change the corporate brand architecture, and subsequently the website design. All sections of the website (including thought leadership) were part of that redesign. And, they would innovate by upgrading to the newest version of the enterprise CMS, which included marketing automation and personalization capabilities. Once again, the audience promotion and measurement strategy had to wait.
The content marketing team spent a year re-platforming the magazine yet again. As it turned out, personalization took the budget too high, so even after hundreds of hours of planning and architecting, the personalization part of the solution would be phase two for the magazine.
In June 2017, the team quietly celebrated. It successfully relaunched the magazine as one of the website’s phased releases. Gone was the original magazine design and in its place the new magazine section looked much like the corporate website. There wasn’t enough time or budget to create templates to match the magazine’s original design or features.
As it turned out, the upgraded CMS was more complex to use. The content marketing team now spent hours instead of minutes preparing posts. New workflow rules required posts go through extra regression testing through IT, taking publishing from days to weeks. The cadence slowed to a crawl. Subscriber growth stalled. The team now spent 50% of their time working in the technology, managing digital assets, addressing the new configurations, looking at personalization features, and trying to integrate enterprise analytics.
An upgraded CMS was complex to use. Posts took hours, not minutes, to prepare. Sound familiar? @Robert_Rose. Click To Tweet
In November 2017, the content marketing director was called into the CMO’s office. “Why,” the CMO wanted to know, “are there no real results from the thought leadership content?”
The content marketing director started to explain the last two and a half years, but the CMO interrupted: “I’d like you and your team to provide me a business case for why this ‘content marketing’ idea will provide value.”
In February 2018, three months shy of its 5th birthday, the financial services company’s digital magazine was killed. The content marketing team was restructured, and the content marketing director left the company. Content marketing, as a tactic, remains at the company. It is simply a handful of writers creating “investor outlook” PDFs emailed to clients and tracked through the enterprise CMS.
Technology debt: Higher than ever
This story is extreme (and true) but all too common. With the constant pressure of innovation and results, C-suite leaders underestimate the true cost of incrementally upgrading existing technology infrastructure, while they ironically incur more and more time, money, and effort to “innovate” their way out of a constant state of software implementation. This invisible but insidious resource drain is called “technical debt.”
An invisible but insidious drain on #contentmarketing is “technical debt,” says @Robert_Rose. Click To Tweet
Technical debt is an increasingly known IT challenge in larger businesses. According to an Accenture survey, 69% of C-suite executives report that “technical debt makes their IT function much less responsive to changes in the market.”
As a recent MIT Sloan Management Review article put it:
(A)s IT software and infrastructure age, and as more features are added to legacy systems, technical debt grows and puts additional fixed operating costs on the company, diverting precious investment in innovation and new capabilities.
In marketing, the issue is more pronounced. In a recent study, half of marketers (50%) say “too many technologies” is their top frustration, followed closely by “integrating technologies” (49%). The average number of marketing software technologies in a company is 16 and ranged as high as 98 in larger organizations. Is it any wonder that 80% of marketers say their least favorite thing is “learning and using new marketing technologies”?
In most cases, the primary challenge is the inability for the business to move quickly due to the old, legacy systems that are patched, upgraded, and hacked together to try and keep up.
However, the marketing challenge has an added burden. Many content and digital marketing teams seem perpetually stuck in a software selection or implementation cycle. The net result is either a blindside by corporate IT strategies (as in the above story) or digital content marketing strategies that look at the landscape of marketing technologies, asking “how can we learn how to do that?” The sad truth is teams never “learn to do that” because just as they start, some new technology implementation awaits around the corner.
In short: Marketers continue to make the minimum interest payment on the technology debt that grows every day.

Getting debt relief: Realizing the ultimate form is change
There are, however, ways out of this mess. One critical factor for content marketers is to have a formulated strategy, which includes a technology landscape, from the beginning. In other words, as content marketers we must get out of “how can we learn to do that” and get into “this is what we aim to do, and here’s what we need to do it.”
It’s critical to create and maintain an early, often, and honest discussion with both the CMO and CIO about the view of the customer’s journey. The word “alignment” gets thrown around a lot when the relationship of the CIO and the CMO are discussed. But success or true alignment is not built from a mutual understanding of separate agendas. Rather, the technology and marketing teams must come together to develop a single collaborative strategy for customer/audience engagement.
Technology & marketing teams must come together to develop a single collaborative strategy. @Robert_Rose Click To Tweet
This communication – as part of a content marketing business case – can be built on three fundamental core values:
1. Orchestrating content experiences, not guiding siloed buyers’ journeys
Put simply, managing a portfolio of content-driven media experiences should not be focused on pulling people through some singular technology-driven buying path or journey. Rather, companies should look to decouple customer/audience data management, and experience presentation and management, and optimization of those experiences. I spoke to this approach and a new way of selecting technologies in the keynote talk at CMI’s Content Tech event this year.

2. Meaning-driven, not data-driven
Data by its definition has no meaning. It is a collection of facts, figures, and attributes about people or their behavior. To make data meaningful, businesses must develop new strategies to find the emotional value in data that is given rather than gathered. Focusing on connecting interactive experiences is critical. I wrote about this last year in CMI’s original research report: The Symphony of Connected Interactive Content Marketing.

3. Organizing for agility, not speed
Much has been made about the need for marketing departments to be more agile, but it’s not necessarily about moving faster. The inability to find the calm in the chaos and the constant pressure of more capability are due to a fear of moving too slowly. Rather, a reinvented content marketing team can find joy and reduce technical debt in the balance of creating strategic, customer-centric experiences that evolve customers and reorienting to more agile strategies. I’ve written quite extensively about what we call “content creation management” and some organizational thoughts – most notably outlining a process for content marketing to take root.

Technology is not change – it is what facilitates change
Ultimately, marketers cannot measure themselves by how fast they can deploy new technology. That’s like saying that you can get out of debt by purchasing more, less expensive cars. You not only accrue more debt, you spend all your time learning how to drive all the cars you have.
There is simply no way to accurately predict what the content marketing organization will need to look like in five years. It’s only been 10 years since any business could even think about how to address such media disruptions as Facebook, or the iPhone, or Android. It’s been less than two since we started talking about voice-activated search.
What will the next five years bring? Who knows. Virtual reality? Artificial intelligence? Pokemon Go round two?
Instead of looking at each new enabling technology (hardware or software) as a need for a new innovative capability or team, node on a matrixed structure, or even a weed that needs to be pruned in your legacy garden, marketers should look at structures where collaboration, content, and data flow more fluidly to handle any new disruption that threatens the focused strategy.
To get out of technical debt, content marketing organizations absolutely need to be built to change – constantly. You need to deploy technology nimbly and decouple from the mother ship of legacy systems. CMOs and CIOs should stop trying to figure out what content and marketing should change into and focus on giving content and marketing the ability to change.
That would be a huge down payment on the principal of our technical debt.
